A GENERAL SURVEY OF QUANZHOU Quanzhou is situated on the southeastern of Fujian province of China, closing to Taiwan between the Taiwan Channel. Licheng, Fengze, Luojiang district and Jinji ang, Shishi, and Nanan city, Huian, Anxi, Yongchun, Dehua, Jinmen (to be unified ) counties and The Managerment commission of Qingmeng and Xiaocuo are all under the jurisdiction of quanzhou of 6.50 million (without Jinmen county) and covers a total area of 10,865 km.Located on the subtropical zone, Quanzhou has a maritime monsoon climate mith an average annual temperature of 18-20¡æ, a frostless period of over 310 days, an annual rainfall of 1,000-1,800mm, and a yearly sunshine of 1,900-2,000 hours. Th ere are some 10 million mu of hilly land, some 2.17 million mu of cultivated lan d, about 2 million mu aquatic surface and 1.18 million mu of shallow sea and bea ch in Quanzhou. The forest tree reserve is over 18.33 million cubic metres and t he exploitable water power reserve over 450,000KW. There is a vast expanse of ma rine space with 421 KM of coastline. In Quanzhou, there are more than 30 kinds o f mineral resources, of which kaolin, granite, diabase, ore of quartz, limestone , coal, iron and manganese are considerably abundant. Quanzhou is a well-known hometown of overseas Chinese in China and the main ance stral home of our Han nationality compatriots in Taiwan. More than 6.7 million o verseas Chinese including Hongkong and Macao compatriots originated from Quanzho u are now living abroad. About 9 million Taiwan Han nationality compatriots were from Quanzhou. In recent years, more and more overseas Chinese, Hongkong, Macao and Taiwan compatriots have come to Quanzhou on visiting their relatives and pa ying homage to their ancestors tombs, as well as travelling and sightseeing, inv esting and trading. They are enthusiastic for building their native place and ar e playing positive role to the development of economy and social welfare of Quan zhou. Quanzhou is one of the 24 famous historical and cultural cities which first prom ulated by the State Council. From Tang to Yuan Dynasty, The Citong Port of Quanz hou had been being a main port for foreign trade in China. It was extolled as Th e First Largest Port of the East and The Startig Point of the Marine Silk Route. The landscape and scenic spots here are quite singular. The cultural relics and the places of historical interests can be found all over. There are more than 4 00 units under all grade culture relics protection, among them, 12 units under s tate's protect and 37 units under provincial protection. Quanzhou is an important component of The Open Economic Area of South Fujian Del ta sanctioned by the State Council. It is also one of the National Experimental Cities of Comprehensive Reform. Quanzhou was also decided to be The Comprehensiv e Experimental District of Reform and Opening to outside and opening to the outs ide world, Quanzhou has been exerting itself in the use of the special policies and the flexible measures vested by the State and the province according to the fact, giving the market regulation the first place, taking the economy of extern al type as the principal thing, and eveloping the diversified ownership economy. Now the comprehensive economic strength of Quanzhou has strengthened remarkably . billion yuan. By the end of 1998, the municipal government had granted apporva l to 6998 foreign\|invested enterprises. The foreign capital of the investment c ontracts was about 9.1 billion US dollars. Among them 4696 approved enterprises are in full operation, and 4.92 billion US dollars of foreign capital has been u sed. We have trade contact with more was 2.36 billion US dollars in 1998. Most o f 21 companies of exploitation of joined area land which had been approved to be established throughout the city have entered the stage of substantive exploitation. The exploited area reached 1 6km2 and where about 600 projects are building. They have become a focal strateg ic point of the development for the economy of external type of the city. In the recent year, Quanzhou have cultured and formed 6 mainstay industry includ ed petrochemical, textile & beverage, architecture & real estate, tourism. Quanz hou is try culturing 2 key industry included electronic & mechanical too, and ma king them to be the economic point of growth of Quanzhou. There is the period when Quanzhou carries out a reform and opening to the outsid e world with multilevels and omnibearings, and developing the economic construct ion with high speed and large stretch at present. We'll further emancipate the m ind, seize the opportunities, be promoting and promising to speed up the step of reform and opening to the outside world, devote major efforts to developing soc ialist market economy, so as to promote the faster and better development of our national economy and social welfare.
