Nanjing County has a history of six hundred years. "Nan" means that Nanjing
County lies in the south of Fujian Province, while the "jing" means peace. The
county covers an area of 1962 square kilometers, and administers eight towns, two
townships and a farm for returned overseas Chinese. It has a total population of 34O
thousand. There are 30 thousand oversea Chinese and one million Taiwanese from Nanjing
County. So Nanjing County is one of the most important homes for Overseas Chinese and
ancestral places of Taiwan compatriots in Zhangzhou City.
Nanjing County has excellent geographical conditions and is rich in natural resources. It
lies to the east of Zhangzhou city proper and the west of Longyan city and is adjacent to
Guangdong province.It's 30 kilometers from Zhangzhou City proper and 100 kilometers from
Xiamen Special Economic Zone. Within the county, it is warm in the winter and cool in the
summer. It belongs to the typical subtropical monsoon climate, with the annual mean
temperature of 21 degree centigrade, the annual rainfall of 1700mm, and the annual
frost-free period of 340 days. So the climate is favorable for developing agriculture with
high production and excellent quality. Nanjing county is one of the most important bases
for sugarcane, fruits, bamboo, domestic fungus, and fresh-water fish-culture.
Zhangpu is famous all over the world for being rich in orchid . It is known as "sea
of tree" and "ocean of bamboo" in South Fujian.Its forest coverage is 60
percent and green belt 85 percent.
