Rapid Progress in Sociol Causes

Zhangzhou city is now making every effort to practise the strategy of promoting the city's economy by developing science and education. At present it has 48,870 professionals of various kinds. including 947 senior ones. There are now seven state-owned scientific
researoh instriutions and 132 individual-owned ones. During the recent five years, 185 projects of science and technology have been implemented, with 137 of them achieving good scientific research results. The contribution rate of science and technology progress to
the economic increment has reached 40%, 10% higher than that of the last five years.

In the last decade. education in Zhangzhou has made much headway, into which a total investment of 689 million yuan has been poured. Elementary school education has been popularized city-wide. Every village has its own primary school, and every township its own
secondary school, by and large. Five colleges and universities are operating in Zhangzhou, and there are eight secondary technical schools. At the same time rapid progress has also been made in adult education.

There has been tremendous development in Zhangzhou's cultural undertakings. So far there are twelve professional art troupes and more than 200 amateur ones altogether, Zhangzhou 'Xiang Opera" Troupe and Chao Qperastyle troupes of Zhao'an, Yunxiao, Dongchan, and Pinghe counties have performed in Singapore, Thailand. Hongkong and Taiwan. Their performances were well received in those countries and regions. The Zhangzhou Puppet Show Troupe has been on tour
to thirteen countries, such as Romania, Yugoslavia, the United States of America, Canada and Germany, giving performances, with the highest praises received from the peoples in those countries.

Considerable progress has been made in Zhangzhou's public health work. As of now there are 42 hospitals with 7,788 beds altogether. Also, every town has its own medical units, and every village their health station. So far the city has 9,902 members of hygiene staff at the technical level and 273 possessing the senior professional titles. Here many hospitals have been equipped with the latest medical instruments imported from abroad.

In recent years, sports in Zhangzhou have made greater progress. The city now runs a sparetime sports school and its nine subordinate counties and district have similar ones. As a result, a lot of talented sportsmen and sports women have been trained. The Zhangzhou Sports Training Centre was founded in 1972, where the Chinese Women's Volleyball Team was formed in 1976. With the intensified training they marched into the world and won five gold medals at world championships. For the past decade and more the training centre has also accommodated teams from other countries and regions, such as Japan , Nepal , India ,Pakistan, Australia, and Taiwan. In journalism and publishing, "Southern Fujian Daily", the local newspaper, is put on sale throughout the country, Now the cily has Zhangzhou TV Station, Zhangzhou Cable TV Station and four cable TV stations plus seven broadcasting stations at the county level. The population coverage rate has reached 91%.
